A contemporary art exhibition at The Source Marrakech bringing together five local and international artists around one question: what does a city leave within us, and what do we offer it in return before our departure? A free, day-to-midnight journey through painting, photography, sculpture, film and music — curated by Marrakech-based artist Laetitia Demay.

What does a city leave within us?

“A city leaves its imprint on us just as much as we leave ours on it.” « Une ville laisse son empreinte en nous autant que nous laissons la nôtre en elle. »

The Source Marrakech welcomes this season Empreinte Nomade, a contemporary art exhibition bringing together local and international artists around a fundamental question: what does a city leave within us, and what do we offer it in return before our departure? Organised by Laetitia Demay, artist and curator based in Marrakech, this first exhibition in the cycle — L'Empreinte Nomade — brings together painting, photography, sculpture, installation, video and textile arts to explore Marrakech as a space of living memory, transmission and dialogue between cultures.

The Source Marrakech accueille cette saison « Empreinte Nomade », une exposition d'art contemporain réunissant des artistes locaux et internationaux autour d'une question fondamentale : que laisse une ville en nous, et que lui offrons-nous en retour avant notre départ ? Organisée par Laetitia Demay, artiste et organisatrice basée à Marrakech, cette première exposition du cycle — L'Empreinte Nomade — convoque peinture, photographie, sculpture, installation, vidéo et arts textiles pour interroger Marrakech comme espace de mémoire vivante, de transmission et de dialogue entre les cultures.

Amazigh, Arab, African and Andalusian heritage; transmission of artisanal know-how; the memory of materials — earth, copper, wool, wood.

    Documentary screening — a sensitive portrait of a humanist artist devoted to his country's history — followed by a conversation with Mr Chalal. Directed by Stéphane Valentin, a Tengri Production.

Based in Marrakech since 2011, Laetitia Demay works at the crossroads of worlds and disciplines — drawing, photography, screen-printing and collage. She builds a unique visual universe and, through her studio 7PARFAIT, offers original works in limited, numbered editions. Empreinte Nomade is her first curatorial initiative, born of a desire to create a living dialogue between international artists and the heritage of the Red City.

Chalal (Abdel Ghani Benchaalal)

Painting · Plural Memory

A figure of Moroccan modern art, Chalal moved to Rabat in the 1960s and met the painter Mohamed Melihi in 1965, then settled in Paris in 1971 among the post-May '68 literary scene. Back in Morocco, his work turned towards Judeo-Berber, Judeo-Arab and African traditions, blending colours, symbols and calligraphic writing. His 1998 series 'From Oral to Written' was dedicated to safeguarding Amazigh culture. A documentary portrait of the artist, directed by Stéphane Valentin (Tengri Production), is screened during the evening, followed by a talk with the artist.

Laurent Cohen

Photography · Founder of The Source Marrakech

Founder of The Source Marrakech, Laurent Cohen is a photographer guided by an attentive eye for detail, texture and the quiet stories nature reveals. For this exhibition he presents a series of macro photographs of the Rose of Jericho — the Resurrection Plant — capturing the poetry of its forms, between abstraction and contemplation. The same artistic sensibility infuses The Source itself, transforming the venue into an experience.

Anass Dou Jdid, street artist, and his wall installation at Empreinte Nomade

Anass Dou Jdid

Street Art · Wall Installation

Born in Meknès in 1992 and a graduate of the city's Institute of Traditional Arts, Anass Dou Jdid treats the wall as a living archive of the city. Lime, iron, stone, posters and pigments — materials recovered from public space — are reassembled to tell the story of urban memory, with his work also coming to life in stop motion. He gives voice back to the walls, to anonymous inhabitants and forgotten stories.

Asmae Laaroubi

Painting · Art Therapy · Special Guest (Secret Room)

A painter and art therapist with over ten years of practice, Asmae Laaroubi explores emotional expression, materiality and the connection between art and wellbeing. Her work ranges from large-format painting to metal sculpture and clay, with the feminine at the centre of her universe. She is the special guest of the Secret Room — an intimate space revealed on the night of the exhibition.

The venue

The Source Marrakech

A music-and-art sanctuary set in a two-hectare garden on the Ourika road, founded by photographer Laurent Cohen — himself one of the exhibiting artists. With its pool, gardens, recording studio and open-air arena, The Source is the perfect setting for Empreinte Nomade.
